Below is the feedback from others to articles we have published on the topic of psychology and the Bible - and our response.
Is there such a thing as “Christian” Psychology?
The Bible says "If ANY man lack wisdom, LET HIM ASK OF GOD (not a mere man - psychologist)." (James 1:5) I hope i never need a psychologist either friend, because if i do it is only because i have ceased to trust the ALL-Mighty. Psychology is for those who do not truly and in a real way walk with and trust in and have faith in the Almighty (Heb. 11). No, rather they hide their unbelief behind the thin veil of a pseudo Christianity which will not be asbestos proof on Judgment Day. The LORD says they have a “evil heart of unbelief.” (Heb. 3:12-15) Who are we ALL going to stand before in Judgment – the LORD Almighty or some mere man, a supposed “expert” who is subverting His clear truth with godless philosophy? Did He not tell us that those who add to His Word OR take away from it are doomed to the plagues (including the lake of fire) in Revelation? (Rev. 22:18-19) Those who go to Egypt (the world) for help instead of the LORD they claim to trust are under His judgment and “accursed.” (Isa, 30:1; Jer. 17:5, Gal. 1:6-10, etc.). They do not genuinely honor God and what He plainly stated. If they did they would live out a life of trust in HIM not mere men. They would get on their face and fast and seek Him diligently until He broke all the yokes as He promised (Isa. 58). Some simply do not want to repent. They want someone to tell them it is not their fault and because of something that happened in their childhood they are they way they are today. They reason away the very Word of God just like the hell-bound Pharisees did. The Son of God said “This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God… Full well ye REJECT the commandment (Word) of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.” (Mk. 7:6-9) Psychology has become the comfortable tradition many trust in (as can be seen by the reaction to this article). It has become the norm or crutch they lean on that never calls them to repentance from which is the root cause of all their problems. These people defy the Almighty by having other gods before them (Exodus 20:3-4). God says He is a Jealous God and His name is Jealous and that He will visit this iniquity with His Judgment (Exod. 20:3-5; 34:14). The LORD says that these people worship at the altar of a false god: “For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God: Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring a
fter their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice.” (Exod. 34:14-15) Psychology is an industry which has to perpetuate itself through long drawn out sessions which never get at the root of man’s problems and yet create a financial income for those leading the circus (blind leading those who choose to reject truth and are willingly blind (Matt. 15:14). Ultimately, if there is not repentance, both will fall into the ditch of eternal damnation for not truly loving God and doing what He told us in His precious Word (2 Thess. 2:9-12). Psycho-Heresy is for those who have only a mere form or formula (outward show only) of godliness and yet DENY Christ and the power of true and total surrender to His Majesty (2 Tim. 3:1-7). They are ashamed of Jesus and His Word and He said He is going to be ashamed of and reject them on Judgment Day (Mk. 8:34-38). Jesus is coming – Are you ready? Do you truly know Him? Matt. 7:21-23 Friend you do not need a man to help you – you need Jesus beloved…He says “Come unto Me” and “Repent.” (Matt. 1:28-30; Lk. 13:3,5)
"EVERY WORD OF GOD IS PURE (not to be mixed: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a LIAR." Proverbs 30:5-6
“I find no mention (in the Bible) of Christian Psychologists either. Nor Christian doctors, dentists, stock brokers, loan officers, nurses, taxi drivers, pilots, or police officers, judges or jurors. I think we should abandon all of these posts too as being unbiblical and thus not acceptable. Come to think of it, the internet isn't either. Perhaps you should get off of that too. (Pardon the sarcasm.)”
True, yet doctors of the body (like Luke), dentists, technology professionals, financial experts, etc., don't pretentiously claim to be dealing with the things that only the LORD can deal with - sin and the very hearts of men. Sin is man’s core problem and only God Himself can solve that problem through the blood of the cross of Jesus Christ (Gen. 6:5; Jer. 17:9; Col. 1:20). Psychology and its proponents and ring leaders claim to be able to help men using various methods. It's a deception - only the LORD Himself can heal the hearts of men and bring them to a state of wholeness. Sin is man's problem and only the sacrificial blood of Jesus Christ can heal him through repentance and complete faith in Him (Isa. 64:6; Rom. 3:23-26). Man's root dilemma is sin and he has NO hope outside of the LORD who made Him. Man’s spiritual state is his MOST important and eternal issue. Teeth, technology, physical bodies, and finances are temporal issues and the soul eternal. Hell awaits those not healed in their hearts through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Psychology pretends to be able to diagnose and bring solution to man’s problems apart from His Maker, yet can only bring a superficial semblance of help - Speaking of false leadership, the Holy Spirit through Jeremiah said “They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.” (Jer. 6:14) See "Sin: Man's Core Problem" http://www.safeguardyoursoul.com/html/sin__man_s_core_problem.html
"I believe this is an excellent article of truth. If you ever try to get counseling at a time when you just need someone to talk to about the terrible mess your in, don't go to a psychologist. If you want to take responsibility for your own sins and faults, don't go to a psychologist. If you just want someone to lead you in the right direction, don't go to a psychologist. They will "love" you into hell and tell you that all your problems are someone else's fault. They will "self affirm" you to death, literally. And some will convince you that you need drugs to "get your mind straight". Rather, when you need advice and direction, seek it in God's Word only being very cautious whom you choose to guide you along the way. I speak from my own experience as well as those of people I know. Please, save yourself from confusion, go to the Lord."
Praise God for the true fear of God and the honor of His Precious Word in your heart brother! Ps 119 -todd
“So you think there is no such thing as a Christian psychologist because it isn't mentioned in the Bible? I guess that would mean that one couldn't be a Christian auto mechanic, or a Christian airplane pilot either since they are not specifically mentioned. Since my degree is in marriage and family therapy, and I am a pastor, I may have a bias, but I see your reasoning as seriously flawed, and your perspective on the field of psychology simplistic and uniformed. Is psychology a replacement for faith in Jesus Christ and confidence in Scripture? No! But can God use a faithful servant who has an understanding of the mental intricacies of the mind's workings? Yes - He can and does.”
You stated that I "managed to insult the intelligence of your readers" then you turn around and do the same thing to me by stating "Your ignorance is pathetic." By the way I am in no way moved or insulted by this your words - I just thought you might examine your own heart (Matt. 7:1-6). Sounds like a nerve was hit ;) Also, have an ale on me brother! Toast to the wonders this "valuable and well established profession" of psychology - but only if you can personally produce the fruit of this industry and demonstrate clearly that it is higher authority than the very words of the God who made man in His holy image (Prov. 21:30). Got any real evidence that psychology has ever truly gotten to the root of man's problem - which is sin? If so please show us all - and by even attempting to do so you will have shaken your fist in the face of the LORD Almighty and told Him that Christ's sacrifice on the cross (precious blood) and resurrection (redemptive mission) were unnecessary and so is His eternal Word which spoke the worlds into existence and uphold them are irrelevant (Jn. 1:1-4; Col. 1:15-17; Heb. 1:1-3). It's time to repent of defending this subversive antichrist industry that claims to have the answers to man's spiritual and mental dilemmas outside of the divine prescription given in the Holy Word of the living God - given to us for doctrine, correction, reproof and instruction in righteousness (2 Tim. 3:15-17). This is defiance in its highest form. It's of the world and originates from the "god of this world (satan)." (2 Cor. 4:4) "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him." (1 Jn. 2:15) Isn’t it time for us to get a spiritual spine and begin to enact the mandate of the LORD by “earnestly contend(ing) for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints?” (Jude 3-4) - todd
“All, I can say is that if the foundation is faulty, a person's subsequent thinking on a matter will be faulty. Our foundation is Christ. We are complete in Him. If we think we are complete in anything else, we will seek our completion somewhere else, but it will fall short. Everything that I need is in Him. He is the Word made flesh that dwelt among us. Psalms 1 tells us, "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly.... but his delight is in the law of the Lord and in that Law he meditates day and night... and he will be like a tree planted beside rivers of water... and in all that he does he prospers." Pro. 4:22, "My Son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. FOR THEY ARE LIFE UNTO THOSE THAT FIND THEM, AND HEALTH TO ALL THEIR FLESH." It is the word of God that heals me and gives rest to my soul. If Jesus, the Word, is my foundation, my spirit, soul, and body will find rest and peace. Whoever can feed me the Word, is the one who can help me find healing and peace for my soul. Psycology and the reasonings of men can not heal me or give me life, but the Word of God can.” Karen, VA
“I posed this question in a somewhat longer form in the first post here, but I thought I'd make it a bit clearer. As I read through the Bible, I see COUNTLESS times where He has used other people to do His will. God does work through us. From Noah to Moses to Ruth to David to Jesus (although Jesus is God, He was doing His Father's will), to the apostles, to all points inbetween, God uses His creation to help mankind, especially in the area of consolation, comfort, and mercy. Why is it so preposterous to think that God cannot use psychologists to help people? Obviously, there are wolves out there in sheep's clothing, but there are also sheep out there trying to do His will. I would welcome any counter-arguments from anyone here, as well as Mr. Tomasella. I see nothing "non-Biblical worldview" about my statement, or non-Biblical at all. Thanks so much!”
Thanks for responding, you seem honest and truly interested to know the truth. First off the LORD is not confused (1 Cor. 14:33). Jesus gave His Church apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers for the maturing of His saints (Eph. 4:11-13). His plan for New Testament believers has not changed. Psychology and psychologists of today appear no where in Scripture. Did the Almighty, all-knowing, infinite Creator somehow forget to tell us something we needed to know? Such a question should be comical to even pose. Psychology has no root in God. It is a godless philisophy which Paul warned us about - did you not read Colossians 2:8-10? The Word and Holy Spirit are how God moves. The simple fact that psychology is not found in God's Word and contradicts the Word of God makes it false. Get in the Word friend - "Study to shew thyself approved unto God" so you can be "throughly furnished unto every good work" and won't be "ashamed." (2 Tim. 2:15; 3:16-17).
“It's a shame Todd doesn't give his readers more than a shadow of an idea of what he means by "psychology." Much confusion could have been eliminated by simply defining his terms. The only clue we're given about what "Psychology" is comes late in the article where he finally mentions Jung and Freud. Jung and Freud??? THAT is the "psychology" we're supposed to be worried about? Well of course! But hardly any psychologist these days (secular or otherwise) takes either Jung or Freud to be remotely authoritative! It might be a bit like warning us that there cannot be such a thing as a "Christian Medical Doctor" because people like Dr. Kevorkian exist. Most (even secular) psychologists would agree that the theories of Jung and Freud are woefully inadequate theories of the human mind. So you attack a strawperson. Todd, you would do well to inform yourself about your subject matter before making grand proclamations about it. Alternatively, you would do well to alert your readers to the fact that you're singling out a TINY AND IRRELEVANT CORNER of the world of psychology for reproof. To attack (unqualified) "Psychology" reveals either profound ignorance or profound dishonesty. You have harmed your readership by inaccurately censuring a source of God's healing. (Sidenote: CWN - how did this article make it past your notice? What's next, "There is nothing Christian about medicine?")
If psychology is a "source of God's healing" as you erroneously surmise (with no substance), please demonstrate such to this readership purely through Holy Scripture. To the contrary "ALL things that pertain unto life and godliness" are "given by inspiration of God" in the WORD (2 Pet. 1:2-4; 2:16-21; 2 Tim. 3:16-17, Ps 119, etc.). According to the Son of God, those who refuse the "Scriptures" and the "power of God" err (Matt. 22:29). Are you born again? The medical community does not erroneously claim to have the answer to man’s spiritual problems which is what psychology falsely claims. Therefore we should rightly divide such and realize that psychologists seek to usurp the place of the LORD and the Word He gave us to heal, teach and correct us - that’s why JESUS came (Ps. 107:20; Lk. 4:18; Jn. 8:31-32, 36). If spiritual freedom comes any other way then Jesus came in vain (Gal. 2:21). It was no one else other than the “Great Shepherd of the sheep” who had all gone astray (all of us), very Son of God, who came from Heaven to shed His perfect divine blood. He came to become sin for us even though He never knew sin (2 Cor. 5:21). who can make men free from sin and satan - “he (Jesus Christ) hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” (Isa. 53:12) If “any man” speaks contrary to the Scriptures while ignoring/demoting Christ and claiming to have the answer for man’s spiritual or emotional problems (rooted in sin which only Christ can forgive) - he has “no light in him” and is “accursed” (Isa. 8:20; Gal. 1:6-10; 1 Pet. 4:11; Rev. 22:18-19). Those who trust in such a “professional” are also cursed instead of being blessed - “Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.” (Jer. 17:5) It is an utter shame that so many people are grossly biblically illiterate and hardened in heart that they actually defend this foolishness.
“Unfortunately this is another in the long list of articles about psychology from from the point of view of ignorance. It is more sad than anything else. Most branches of psychology have a piece of biblical truth but either overblow that particular approach as with BF Skinner and behaviorism. Are we complete blank slates as behavioirists believe? No. Do we learn, mimic and can we learn to fix what God tells us is wrong through His spirit and practicing what is good and acceptable? Yes. Many Christian psychologists are not very Christian in their approach and that can be seen by all. Many use Scripture as the basis for recognizing sinful patterns in the person's life and help by using sound biblical principles and commands. That does not mean that Jay Adams has it all correct either. Many times we do not or cannot find the 'specific sin' that caused or causes the problem with a person's thinking and that person needs God's help and encouragment from someone to walk with them. Grace and Peace, Jim”
Why is this biblical view "ignorant" as you surmise? Is it because you are wiser than the Almighty? Is it because your faith is not pure - from the Word only - and you still trust in mere sinful men who parade themselves as doctors or "experts"? Those who do not believe and embrace and do God's Word are said to be unbelievers and willingly "ignorant." (2 Pet. 3; Hebrews) Whose report will YOU believe? (Isa. 53:1) Who made man in His own image? Is the LORD's hand now somehow shortened that He can no longer reach down and save, heal, bless and deliver and transform spirit, soul and body (which He alone made)? See Isa. 59:1-2.
“Hi Todd,When speaking about this issue, I often hear people quote the scriptures about loving thy neighbor as thyself, which appears in the bible at least eight times. This is the argument about self love that I've experienced. Obviously if one is to be honest, it doesn't line up with the whole counsel of God and other scripture that speaks about picking up one's cross and following the Lord and not living in the flesh. Then you have the argument that God's word has conflicts. For years the one question that I had was what does it truly mean to be born again? I needed to have that question answered and I was not given real truth from my leaders - the whole understanding of conversion and the knowing the depravity of our sinful nature. One scripture that also helps me here when speaking to these people is what John the Baptist said about Jesus - He must increase and I must decrease. This simply does not add up with loving one's self. I would welcome any further comments you may have on this subject when others bring up loving thy neighbor as thyself.” Laurie
Thanks for opening up this topic more Laurie. It is vital for us to divide between truth and falsehood in this important subject (2 Tim. 2:15; 3:16; 1 Jn. 4:1-3). You are tracking correctly through the Word of God in my estimation. I love the verse you shared about the declaration of John the Baptist – “He (not me!) MUST increase but I MUST decrease (lay it all down).” (Jn. 3:30) I have yet to find one command or in all of Holy Scripture instructing us “learn to love ourselves.” In fact, this is man’s greatest sin problem. Adam chose to love self above God, therefore the curse of sin and separation followed (Rom. 5:12). When God apprehends one and brings him into His kingdom, what does He then instruct that believer to do? – to be conformed to Christ’s death, to be selfless, deny self, lay down the life, be crucified with Jesus, experience the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable to his death (Jn. 15:13; Rom. 8:29; Rom. 3:10; 1 Pet. 2:21; 4:1)
Any person teaching men to love themselves is teaching such without divine authority and even worse, against divine authority. This doctrine of self-love is contrary to God’s revealed Word and should be confronted and rebuked sharply – “rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith.” (Tit. 1:13) Many in leadership today have forsaken God’s Word and turned aside to heretical fables and doctrines of devils, having no divine substantiation for what they are teaching. Check out what the apostle Paul told Timothy, his understudy:
“Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned: From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.” 1 Timothy 1:4-7
Origin of Self-Love
This confusion is the result of our leaders not diligently seeking the LORD, studying, and “rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Tim. 2:15) Wasn’t Lucifer the first self-love proponent we have on record? Read Isaiah 14:12-15. What did self-love get him? Jesus told us: “I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.” (Lk. 10:18) Lucifer became Satan and was ejected from Heaven for self-love! In the same way, we will be ejected from God’s holy presence if we lift up ourselves out of pride and self-love. There are so many Scriptures that refute self-love that I don’t know where to begin. Here’s but one - “God resisteth (sets Himself against) the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” (James 4:6)
Pride is sinful rebellion and cannot remain in the presence of the one, true, holy God. So, go figure that so-called “Christian” leaders today are pyschologizing the faith of the Gospel by teaching men to love themselves. Beware saints! Like Paul the apostle of Jesus, set yourself for the “defence of the gospel” and “earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the saints.” (Phil. 1:17; Jude 3-4)
If you know any person who believes and/or teaches self-love, as them this in love: Would you mind showing me where we are instructed to love ourselves?
Most will answer with this as they have been taught: “Jesus said to love thy neighbor as thyself, so we have to learn to love ourselves so that we will be able to love our neighbor.” Is this what Jesus meant? Not quite. There are links to information below to help you further study this topic and be ready to give the divinely-revealed biblical answer in wisdom and love.
Is Self-Love What We Need More Of?
“For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it…” Ephesians 5:29
On a personal note: My biggest problem is the love of self – esteeming self! Is this your problem also? Paul told us it was his problem (Rom. 7:18, 24) So, learning to love myself would only worsen the dilemma. The saints of the Most High are instructed to “deny” not esteem self and to “esteem (build up)” others “ABOVE ourselves.”
“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” Matthew 16:24-26
Jesus taught us to abandon the self-life, get on the cross, and live as He did (dead to the self agenda), lest we lose our souls eternally.
This begs the question: Why would the very Son of God instruct any person to build up what He commanded us repeatedly to tear down or crucify and deny?
“For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor…I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:18, 20
Do you know what order do the words “self” and “esteem” appear in the Bible?
“Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:2-5
True believers are to “esteem other(s) BETTER than themselves.” This clearly refutes the lie that we are to build up the self-life and learn to love ourselves better so we can love others. As we seek and fear God, His presence fills our hearts and lives and we are complete in Him and have “strong confidence.” (Ps. 16:11; Prov. 14:26; Eph. 3:16-20; Col. 2:6-10)
Being built up in the Word and Spirit are what we are to make sure we do as individuals (Job 22:22-30; Acts 20:32; Rom. 10:17; Eph. 3:16-20; Jude 20).
Jesus came and laid down His life and sent us to do the same (Jn. 13:15; Phil. 2:2-10).
We seem to be so ignorant of God’s Word that we have not seen this evil teaching for what it truly is – luciferic. It’s time to become “valiant for the truth,” to “buy the truth, and sell it not.” (Prov. 23:23; Jer. 9:3)
Jesus is coming and He has foretold us that the self-love message would gain great prominence in the final days leading up to His return for His Bride.
“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power (authority; lordship) thereof: from such turn away… 2 Timothy 3:1-5, 13
The true Bride of Christ identifies herself by making herself ready by crucifying the self-life and choosing to love Him who is worthy of all praise more than self! (1 Jn. 2:28-3:3)
It’s not all about you! It’s all about the LORD! This whole self-love message goes diametrically against everything we see in Scripture. God so loved that world that He what? “GAVE!” It’s time to lay down our lives and stop taking and start GIVING ourselves first to God then to others (2 Cor. 8:5). This is what the Christian life is all about, not free-loading but giving! Jesus said:
“It is MORE BLESSED to GIVE than to receive.” Acts 20:35
This love-of-self-more-than-God message is actually a sign of the last days, where false prophets who have departed from the faith are spreading there “doctrines of devils,” bringing damnation to those who do not possess a deep love for the truth (Matt. 24:3-5, 11, 24; 2 Thess. 2:3, 10-12; 1 Tim. 4:1-6; 2 Tim. 3:1-7).
Enduring to the end in obedient faith, the true saint must never lose sight of the truth that this whole life is a test – to see whether or not we are going to love God more than self. The wise-virgin believer must cut off any voice that is teaching his heart to build up what Jesus Christ commanded us to crucify (Prov. 19:27; Gal. 2:18).
PRAYER: Father in Heaven, I beseech You to help me to truly know, love, and worship You in Spirit and in truth and not to be misled. I choose to praise, worship, and verbally give You thanks this day, that You alone might be enthroned upon my heart and myself dethroned! You must increase, but I must decrease. Let there be peace in Jerusalem. I bless the seed of Abraham this hour, that their eyes might be open to see their Messiah who has come and is coming again soon. Amen.
